Given the present state of Lake Eppalock, it is hard to imagine how Bendigo has produced an Olympic silver medallist in sailing.

Bendigo’s distance from waves only makes Glenn Ashby’s achievement yesterday even more remarkable.

While most of his mates in Bendigo spent their teenage years kicking a footy or hitting a cricket ball, Ashby was hell-bent on one thing - becoming the world’s best sailor.
