IWC closes, Japan to continue 'scientific' whale hunt

Posted on 28/06/2008

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting in Santiago has come to a close, with Japan ignoring Australia’s call for it to suspend its scientific whale hunt.

After five days of talks the 60th IWC meeting has finished with countries agreeing to negotiate the future of the body.

But Japan has failed to respond to a call from Australia to suspend its scientific whaling program.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett says that request still stands.
